It’s About Time, Pottermore!

Posted in Books, Harry Potter, Movies with tags , , , , , on September 24, 2011 by Samantha Rose

So I FINALLY got my Pottermore e-mail!! I’m not very far into the site yet, but I have learned a few things already. So, here they are. (Sorry for those of you who don’t understand or if I spoil anything for anyone.)

1. The site has no music. It’s a bummer, but some people have been watching the movie while playing, or listening to the soundtracks through iTunes or whatever. I personally just listen to my iTunes library on shuffle because it doesn’t really matter to me. Sure, it would be cool to listen to the soundtrack while exploring the site, but it’s not a big deal for me.

2. Brewing potions is really hard. It took some time for me to figure it out, and I actually ended up getting on skype and asking Molly how to do it. Turns out I was putting the wrong thing into the potion. It was much easier once I learned how to correctly read instructions. ūüėČ

3. The directions for casting spells are not very clear. So if you’re having trouble with spells, this is how you do it. Click on the first letter of the spell, click it again once the circle around the letter is at the biggest and brightest point. That will shoot a line towards the next letter. Click the next letter in the spell once that line is close or on the letter. Repeat this process until the spell is cast! (hope that helped!)

4. The site is meant as a companion to the books, so there isn’t a whole lot to do if you’re looking to play games. Mostly it’s reading and collecting little items for your trunk. This may change as the site develops, so we’ll wait and see.

Right now, I am really enjoying the site. It’s fun to hear more about the characters, places, and objects, and the site is really beautiful. If you’re on Pottermore, add me! My username is ChestnutPatronus162, and I’m a Hufflepuff. (Wasn’t super excited about Hufflepuff…I always thought of myself as a Ravenclaw but whatever!)

Hunger Games and Pottermore

Posted in Books, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Movies, Twilight with tags , , , , , , , on September 1, 2011 by Samantha Rose

No, I have not yet entered into Pottermore. I’m getting so impatient!! Although it would be awesome to be a Gryffindor, I would love to be a Ravenclaw. Heck, I’d settle for Slytherin! Just please, someone shoot me if I’m in Hufflepuff. Just kidding…kind of. I mean, everyone knows Hufflepuff is the worst house, right?!? (Sorry if you were placed in Hufflepuff…) Ok for those of you wondering what the heck I’m rambling about, it’s about Harry Potter/Pottermore. Once you enter Pottermore, you are sorted to one of the four houses (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, or Hufflepuff.) But I haven’t been in to Pottermore yet…but I’ll post about it once I do get in.

Another really amazing book series is the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The series is being made into movies (Of course..) which I’m actually really excited for. I had my doubts about the cast, but after viewing the teaser trailer and several movie stills, I have faith in the cast. Anyway, Lionsgate has recently opened an interactive site with the Hunger Games. Although nothing is really available yet, you can be placed in a District (There are 12 Districts in Panem, which is basically the country of the book). I got District 8-the textile district. There is another fan-made site which has also yet to be fully opened. Again, you can be placed in a District. I was placed in District 11 (Rue’s district!) on this website. Both sites look interesting, and I look forward to seeing more from them.

A while ago, I posted about Twimore, a spoof of Pottermore made by Kaleb Nation. Although Twimore was a spoof, it does make you wonder if there will be an interactive site for the Twilight Saga soon. Stephenie Meyer’s site rarely posts, although other fan sites are going strong. To be honest, I hardly keep up with the Twilight Saga anymore, and I haven’t seen Eclipse since I watched it in theaters. (A bit of a shock, right?) Even if Twilight doesn’t have an interactive site, I feel like these types of sites could become standard for popular book series. They certainly do offer an in-depth experience of the novels, and I’m excited to see what Pottermore and the Hunger Games’ sites will be like.

So what do you think? Should interactive sites for novels become a thing?

Ghosts of War

I’m currently reading a book called Ghosts of War by Ryan Smithson. It’s a true story about a¬†guy (Ryan Smithson)¬†who joined the Army Reserve right out of high school and was then deployed to Iraq when he was 19. He’s an incredible writer, and if you get the chance to read it, I would highly recommend it. One of my favorite passages is this:

(Talking about how the soldiers aren’t supposed to give water or food to the starving children watching them pass)
“These kids are the future of Iraq. They’re the ones who’ll decide whether or not this war means anything. Not the commander. Not American politicians or the press. It’s the children who will always remember the Americans who stopped by their farm and handed out Gatorade. And they will remember that they weren’t just Americans. They were American soldiers.
At the end of the day it’s our job to make sure there are more kids who identify us as the soldiers who are generous as opposed to the soldiers who destroy villages. One day at a time, one child at a time, that’s how we make a difference. That’s the only way we can come out of this mess feeling like it’s worth something.
Preserve the innocent. Protect those who deserve it most.”

Twimore

So I’m sure some of you have heard about Pottermore.¬†If you haven’t, Pottermore is a new site from J.K. Rowling that officially opens in October. It’s an interactive site that offers exclusive content on the world of Harry Potter and the books. It’s a pretty big deal for any Harry Potter fan (which is me). They had early registration last week, and I got in! So I’ll be one of the million people that gets into the site early. (My username is ChestnutPatronus162)
But, one of my favorite author/blogger/youtube person, Kaleb Nation, decided to parody this site and call it Twimore. He made a video similar to J.K. Rowling’s Pottermore announcement and even created a website. He offered early registration as well (My username on Twimore is RainbowVampWolfXoXo which I personally find awesome & hilarious). He also put an exclusive sneak peek of Stephenie Meyer’s new book…called Erupting Star. You can click here to go read it. My favorite part is the table of contents. Enjoy!!

Favorites

Some of my current favorite things:

1. Book in the Bible: Psalms. Always. I think Psalms is one of those books that has something for everyone…

2. Verse: I couldn’t pick just one, so here are a few of my favorites…
Psalms 34:18 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalms 116:6-9 “The Lord protects the simplehearted; when I was in great need, he saved me.¬†Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you. for you, O Lord, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living.”
Matthew 6:27 “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”
Matthew 5:3-5 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”
Acts 20:24 “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me–the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.”

3. Song: Shipwreck by Starfield¬†This song really means a lot to me…I can still remember hearing it for the first time in Seattle, sitting at the desk in our room at the Ronald McDonald House and just sobbing. This song made me start listening to Starfield¬†again, and that band is the reason why I went to the Dare 2 Share conference in Seattle a couple of years ago.¬†That conference renewed my faith and strength in the Lord. I don’t know where I would be today if I hadn’t gone there and had the experience that I did.

4. One of my favorite places (in town) : The museum at sunset…it’s gorgeous & it’s where I usually go to take pictures…I also go out on those roads to walk at night. It’s breathtaking…

5. Activity: Besides relaxing and enjoying summer, taking pictures of our garden and flowers around town¬†to remind myself that winter does not last forever…

6. Rediscovering how much I love to blog and write…will hopefully continue to do it more often!! After I’m done posting this…I have decided to try to write some poetry again. I haven’t written poetry in what feels like forever. I do have story in my mind though…but we’ll see how that goes.

For those of you who don’t know…Stephenie Meyer came out with a new book!!!!

I know…I FREAKED OUT too…=)

Yesterday me & Molly went shopping. ¬†Of course I bought it!!! ¬†I also bought the Eclipse soundtrack…I wanted to buy the Twilight graphic novel as well…but Molly told me not to. ¬†For some reason she thinks that I have enough Twilight-related things….silly girl.

That silly girl is currently on her way to her college orientation…She won’t be back until Wednesday. ¬†As if that isn’t bad enough..my dad went with her. ¬†That’s right. ¬†Until Wednesday, it’s just me and my momma at the house. ¬†But it will just be basically my mom…Why? ¬†Because I got a new Stephenie Meyer book!! ¬†I fully plan on ignoring the rest of the world while I read that book.

Well…mostly I’ll ignore the world. ¬†Except for those few hours a day that I work. ¬†That’s right. ¬†I got a job. ¬†Look at me…I’m all independent and stuff!! ¬†(Not really…I work for only three hours a day..not quite independent..but I’m getting there!!) ¬†I’m working at our local deli…mostly I take orders and clean. ¬†Now that school is done, I’ll be needing something to do. ¬†So at least I’ll have work!! ¬†(which of course is LOTS of fun…hehe)

Besides work, in July I’ll start driving!! ¬†Scary, right? ¬†I’m excited. ¬†Hopefully I don’t hit too many things….Maybe people should start praying now…=)

PEACE

Baby food, Bandslam, and Need

Posted in Books, Friends, Movies, Random with tags , , , on March 21, 2010 by Samantha Rose

Last night, I hung out with one of my best friends.  One of our favorite people on Youtube did a video where he ate different flavors and kinds of baby food to see which one was the best.  We were in the baby food aisle, for no reason, and we started talking about the video.  She asked me if I had ever had the banana baby food.  I said no.  So we picked some up so I could try it.  Then we decided to do our own experiment with the baby food.  So we purchased nine different kinds of baby food and ate them.  It was horrible.  It was also a very bad idea.  However, it was very fun.  I could still taste the Butternut Squash for the rest of the night though.

We also watched a movie after we ate the horrible baby food.  We watched Bandslam.  I did not expect it to be very good, but it was!  The main guy in the movie was very awkward.  He kind of reminded me of Andy Samberg, except he was not cute and he looked super awkward.  There is this really funny scene where he is listening to his Ipod and dancing down the hallway.  It made us laugh sooo hard.  Anyway, the movie was really good.

This week I read a book called Need.  It is by Carrie Jones.  When I first started reading it, I was not really sure how good it was going to be.  It was random and I felt like there was a book before it.  (There is not a book before it.  It is the first book in the series.)  But soon, I really got into it and started to love it.  It ended up being such a great book.  I really want to read the second book, but I am broke, so I cannot buy it!  I could see if the library has it, but my guess is that they do not.  Anyway, if you are looking for a good fantasy book (it had pixies and a werewolf) then you should definitely read it.
