Ghosts of War

Posted in Books with tags , , , , on August 9, 2011 by Samantha Rose

I’m currently reading a book called Ghosts of War by Ryan Smithson. It’s a true story about a guy (Ryan Smithson) who joined the Army Reserve right out of high school and was then deployed to Iraq when he was 19. He’s an incredible writer, and if you get the chance to read it, I would highly recommend it. One of my favorite passages is this:

(Talking about how the soldiers aren’t supposed to give water or food to the starving children watching them pass)
“These kids are the future of Iraq. They’re the ones who’ll decide whether or not this war means anything. Not the commander. Not American politicians or the press. It’s the children who will always remember the Americans who stopped by their farm and handed out Gatorade. And they will remember that they weren’t just Americans. They were American soldiers.
At the end of the day it’s our job to make sure there are more kids who identify us as the soldiers who are generous as opposed to the soldiers who destroy villages. One day at a time, one child at a time, that’s how we make a difference. That’s the only way we can come out of this mess feeling like it’s worth something.
Preserve the innocent. Protect those who deserve it most.”

For those of you who don’t know…Stephenie Meyer came out with a new book!!!!

I know…I FREAKED OUT too…=)

Yesterday me & Molly went shopping.  Of course I bought it!!!  I also bought the Eclipse soundtrack…I wanted to buy the Twilight graphic novel as well…but Molly told me not to.  For some reason she thinks that I have enough Twilight-related things….silly girl.

That silly girl is currently on her way to her college orientation…She won’t be back until Wednesday.  As if that isn’t bad dad went with her.  That’s right.  Until Wednesday, it’s just me and my momma at the house.  But it will just be basically my mom…Why?  Because I got a new Stephenie Meyer book!!  I fully plan on ignoring the rest of the world while I read that book.

Well…mostly I’ll ignore the world.  Except for those few hours a day that I work.  That’s right.  I got a job.  Look at me…I’m all independent and stuff!!  (Not really…I work for only three hours a day..not quite independent..but I’m getting there!!)  I’m working at our local deli…mostly I take orders and clean.  Now that school is done, I’ll be needing something to do.  So at least I’ll have work!!  (which of course is LOTS of fun…hehe)

Besides work, in July I’ll start driving!!  Scary, right?  I’m excited.  Hopefully I don’t hit too many things….Maybe people should start praying now…=)

Baby food, Bandslam, and Need

Last night, I hung out with one of my best friends.  One of our favorite people on Youtube did a video where he ate different flavors and kinds of baby food to see which one was the best.  We were in the baby food aisle, for no reason, and we started talking about the video.  She asked me if I had ever had the banana baby food.  I said no.  So we picked some up so I could try it.  Then we decided to do our own experiment with the baby food.  So we purchased nine different kinds of baby food and ate them.  It was horrible.  It was also a very bad idea.  However, it was very fun.  I could still taste the Butternut Squash for the rest of the night though.

We also watched a movie after we ate the horrible baby food.  We watched Bandslam.  I did not expect it to be very good, but it was!  The main guy in the movie was very awkward.  He kind of reminded me of Andy Samberg, except he was not cute and he looked super awkward.  There is this really funny scene where he is listening to his Ipod and dancing down the hallway.  It made us laugh sooo hard.  Anyway, the movie was really good.

This week I read a book called Need.  It is by Carrie Jones.  When I first started reading it, I was not really sure how good it was going to be.  It was random and I felt like there was a book before it.  (There is not a book before it.  It is the first book in the series.)  But soon, I really got into it and started to love it.  It ended up being such a great book.  I really want to read the second book, but I am broke, so I cannot buy it!  I could see if the library has it, but my guess is that they do not.  Anyway, if you are looking for a good fantasy book (it had pixies and a werewolf) then you should definitely read it.

Animal Farm

Yep.  In my English class, we are reading Animal Farm.  So far, I think it is a bit weird.  But, then again, I have only read the first chapter.  I already know a little bit of what happens though, because I asked Molly.  The story seems strange now, but I am trying to still have an open mind and give the book a chance.  This is hard, but I am doing my best.

My Seattle trip is getting closer.  This morning, I had a bit of a panic attack because I said something about sitting with one of my cousins on the bus, and my mom said, ‘Oh, they are not coming.’  I freaked out.  They are probably going to be the only people I know on the trip, and now she tells me they are not going?!?!  Dad saved the day though when he told me that they would be there.  So now, I will know like, three people on this trip!  Yay!  =)

I woke up this morning to snow on the ground.  SNOW.  We had a week of nice weather.  And now winter has returned.  It makes me very sad.  I am ready for the snow to be gone and for the sun to show itself.

New Moon comes out on DVD in a couple weeks.  I have yet to pre-order it!  I keep forgetting.  Last year, I pre-ordered Twilight like a month before it came out on DVD.  I am way behind.  This is not good.  *worried face*

Yesterday I walked down to the library to take some books back.  I was not planning on checking out any books because I just bought a couple new books a few weeks ago and I am still working on them.  I checked out books.  I just could not help myself.  They had a book on hold for me and so I took it.  And then I went back just to look at the books and I started grabbing some.  And now, I have a lot of books to read.  And I will not really have time this weekend to read.  I checked out Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, The Carbon Diaries 2015, Fire, and a vegetarian cook book.  (I have wanted to try being a vegetarian for a long time now, but I never know what to cook.  However, most of the food in that book did not sound appealing.  I think I can suffer through eating meat for a while.)  I have read Sense and Sensibility before, but I loved it, so I had to check it out again.  I have not read any of the others before.  As I do read them, I will tell what I think about them here.

I am noticing that these posts are longer than what I remember writing before.  Maybe I missed blogging more than I thought.  Obviously, I have a lot to write about.  It feels good to be back though.  =)

Call me Crazy

Another short post to say…..I finished Breaking Dawn!!!!!!!! Yep. When we got to GF, the first stop we made was at the B&N there. I gladly took my book and then we made our way to the movie theatre. I had told my self, and my family, that I wasn’t going to open Breaking Dawn until we left GF. Ha. Right. As soon as we got in the car I opened it up. xD But after I read about, two pages maybe, I had to leave it behind. We went and saw Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D. It was pretty good. As much as I liked the movie, I was still excited to get back to the book. (Of course, I had already read the first chapter in the special edition of Eclipse. But I was still excited.) And then we went and ate. Again, I left the book behind for some time with my family. As soon as we got done eating, I thought I would finally be able to pick up my book and just read. And then we went to Wally World. My book was left behind (again) and I waited until we were all done there. And then, I could finally read my book. I didn’t stop. I had predicted that I wouldn’t sleep until it was finished, and I was right. I started it around 9 at night, and when we got home, I kept reading. I kept reading until 8 in the morning. And then, I shut the book closed, feeling completely satisfied. I carefully put the book in my sister’s room so she could read it first thing. (Okay..I really really want to talk about it with someone…) I tried sleeping and couldn’t. I was still a little hyper from finishing. After all, the book is amazing!!!! But, I eventually got to sleep. And now, I just have to be patient until my sister and mom finish the book. (Comment here if you’ve read it all! I’m kinda desperate to discuss it. xD)

Breaking almost here.

Yep. August second, I will be driving myself crazy because I will not have that book. I had pre-ordered my copy back in February (that’s right. FEBRUARY.) but this week, I realized, hey, I won’t get this book until maybe the eleventh or so. I can’t wait that long. And since we’ll be going school clothes shopping (gah. summer is going to end soon-ish) on the seventh, my lovely mom made a call to the barnes and noble in Great Falls and reserved a copy for me. So, no, I won’t have it August second, but I will have it soon after that. My mom claims that while I’m sleeping she’ll read it. I told her the one flaw in that plan. I have my doubts that once I get my hands on Breaking Dawn that I won’t be sleeping or doing much else besides reading it.

A few weeks ago, Stephenie started putting up a quote a day from Breaking Dawn. This was to supposedly ‘satisfy’ us. Yeah right. It just made us all crazy as we tried to figure it out. But, at least we got something. =) If you’re interested in reading the quotes, you can check them all out here.
